Inspiration: Robert Stilin

Monday, February 6th, 2012

While searching for fabric to complete my most recent restoration project (see previous post on our Milo Baughman recliner) I looked to one of my favorite elle decor photos for inspiration.  I’m working on bringing the varied wood and leather hues and the warm rust and mustard  in designer Robert Stilin’s sitting room into our own living area.  I think the Knoll “Red Fox” boucle is a good dupe for the deep, weathered patina on Robert Stilin’s leather chair.

Inspiration: Commune Design LA

Officially hooked on Commune.   Earlier we took a look at Roman Alonso’s place.  He heads up the firm’s design team. Here are a few photos of a Silver Lake, LA residence that Commune took on a few years back.  I am so very enamored with the design firm’s rustic modern look and their use of african textiles and mid century furniture.

Color!

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

If you’ve been following Besting Nesting , you know about our struggle with color.  You might remember that we joined the Apartment Therapy Spring Home Cure way back in April.  Week three’s assignment in the eight-week Cure was to add color to your space. Four months later we’ve finally made some progress.

Working with an exposed brick wall really limited our choices.  Things became easier when we gave in and pulled all the colors for our accessories from the brick–deep red, orange, and grey. The real turning point was finding these handmade wool and cashmere pillows.  I feel as though Lauren Saunders, of California Modern, designed them just for our space.

There’s  a bit more artwork, too– like the Kuba cloths from my textile collection that are framed, matted and hanging above the sofa.   This group of CB2 dot wall hooks hung in our entryway looks like art and adds another very welcoming dose of orange.

Classic Graphic

Click the pic for a closer look.  Okay, the blue willow painting didn’t work out.  Sadly, it won’t be coming home with me. So, here we are..another Corkboard with plans for the living room.  This time a pair of nature prints from the collection at the New York Public Library is the focus.  I think the patterns in the butterfly wings play off of the colors and shapes in the vintage japanese and african fabrics we’ll be using for pillows.

Mid-Century Traditional

Click the pic for a closer look.  Another cork board with possible plans for the living room…  I’ve loved DC designer Darryl Carter’s work since seeing a spread of his home back in 1997 in Metropolitan Home.  His work and his book The New Traditional inspired this version of the room.  I’ve taken the approach of using classic mid-century pieces to ground the room–the Georgian-shaped sofa, the Wegner wing chair, the vintage Chinese stool and the Noguchi lamp.   The palette this time around feels a bit more classical because I’ve added a jute rug and linen fabric that pick up the same pebble-grey in the wall paint.

These photos are the inspiration for the room.  The wall behind our sofa is exposed brick as well.  The wool rug has a very similar feel to the jute rug I’ve chosen from West Elm.  The color palette is drawn from the materials in the furnishings and includes a mix of wood tones, weathered grays, and washed-looking natural linen.
